Group-wide meetings of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group (ECOG-ACRIN) occur twice a year, and are open to researchers affiliated with member institutions, patient advocates who are members of ECOG-ACRIN’s various scientific committees, industry representatives, and invited individuals from external (non-member) organizations. Group meetings are closed to the public.

Big Data and AI in ECOG-ACRIN: Directions for Cancer Research
Thursday, October 24, 12:00 – 3:30 PM
We welcome all attendees of the Fall 2019 Group Meeting to join us at this inaugural symposium, named for ECOG-ACRIN’s late Group Co-Chair Robert L. Comis, MD (pictured at left). Going forward, all ECOG-ACRIN group meetings, both spring and fall, will begin with this symposium, a focused examination of a field of scientific opportunity, with the goal of seeding ideas for ECOG-ACRIN’s various committees to explore.
This fall’s program will address a topic that resonates throughout our activities in ECOG-ACRIN: the promise and the pitfalls of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
Accessing clinical data to assess efficacy and impact is, of course, a challenge of our information-rich age. Symposium speakers, including Lawrence N. Shulman, MD, Deputy Director for Clinical Services, and Director of the Center for Global Cancer Medicine at the Abramson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania (who directs the National Cancer Database) and Neal J. Meropol, MD, Vice President of Research Oncology at Flatiron Health, will engage with this issue: How do we extract meaningful data from the medical record for these purposes?
Additional speakers will present data-rich sources of information and their use. We will release the full agenda and announce all presenters prior to the meeting.
The potential of translational research to advance cancer diagnosis, prevention, and treatment was a guiding passion for Dr. Comis, and we look forward to honoring him in this way. We hope to see you at this special session.
